Latinas Are So Money

Carmen Rita Wong

In 2018, straight out of the gate, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, AOC, talked and tweeted about economic policy with the confidence of a white man. There she was, freshening up our screens: a young Latina with red lips and hoop earrings speaking to and challenging financial power in this country, something rarely—if ever—seen on the national political stage.

Those first few weeks, I held my breath as I watched the flood of dismissal and belittlement pour over her and her followers in waves. And I braced myself for what was still to come. I knew too well what would happen as she dared to address, con huevos, the world of finance, banking, and business, institutions filled with and controlled by pale males. Pale males who think of women—especially women of color—as lesser when it comes to money talk.

The vitriol coming AOC’s way was all too familiar to me. Ten years before her win, in 2008, I was the first Latina to solo-host a prime-time one-hour finance television show. It was on CNBC. I knew my stuff. I had come from an editor post at Money magazine and had been at Fortune as well. I also wrote and sold one of the first personal finance advice books by a woman of color when those things weren’t done. But in spite of all this, all too often the reaction to me on the set of my show from guests—nearly always white males—was as follows:

GUEST: “Are you really Hispanic?”

GUEST: “Wow. You’re smart!”
