Paulus of Aegineta (Paul of Aegina) (625-690) was a Byzantine Greek physician of Alexandra who is best known, and remembered, for his writing the medical encyclopedia Medical Compendium in Seven Books (in Latin, “Epitomae medicae libri septem”). The books contained nearly everything known about medical arts in the West in his time and was unrivaled for its accuracy and completeness. The books were based primarily on the works of earlier Greek physicians such as Galen, Oribasius, and Aetius. The “Epitome” had a great influence on the Arabs’ medical practice, which considered Paul among the most important of Greek medical writers. The Persian master physician, Rhazes, and Islam’s foremost surgeon, Abu ai-Qasim, borrowed greatly in producing their powerful writings and books.

Paul is said to have removed tonsils, performed tracheostomy, resected ribs, tapped the abdomen, and to have “cut for stone”. Midwives consulted Paul, whence he received the name of Al-kawabeli or the “Accoucheur” (a doctor, who assists at childbirth).

Nothing is known about his life, except that he was born on the island of Aegina, but the exact time he lived is not precisely known. Most authors consider Abu-ai-Farajis correct in placing him in the latter half of the 7th century. He was called “Iatrosophistes and Periodeutes”, meaning a physician who travelled from place to place to practice his profession.
