But if leaving was not your idea, you are now thrust into that searching mode without having had any time to contemplate being unemployed and what that means for your immediate future. The social aspects of leaving a job are usually significant for most people, especially if it was not your choice to leave. If you were fired, you will no doubt have to deal with the reason(s) you were fired. That can certainly take an emotional toll on you and on your family. It can also affect getting a new job, if that’s the path you choose.
Once you have dealt with the loss of income (or reduced income if you are eligible for unemployment benefits), your next step will be to determine whether you want to find another full-time job, work part time, totally retire, or take some time before making that decision. The reason you are no longer working will certainly have an effect on your future plans.
Tip
Most career counselors recommend that when you are let go from a job, you take a little time to think about what you want to do, not just jump into the first opportunity that comes along. They also suggest, however, that you not take too long so you don’t have to explain in a job application any prolonged absence.
But in a difficult economy like the one we’re experiencing now, having a job, even one that’s not ideal, may be a lot better than continuing to look.
