Olive waddled into the break room to find a group of nurses talking only to get silent when she walked in. That was a clear sign that they had been talking about her. Something that had been going on since she and Kameron came out as the newly engaged couple.

“Don’t worry about them,” Jessica said as she walked in behind Olive. Jessica was a nurse that basically stayed to herself. She didn’t befriend coworkers because she knew the girls at the job could be messy.

“Okay,” Olive said, holding her head up high as she walked to the refrigerator to grab her and Kameron’s lunch.

“Homewrecker.” Someone in the group voiced loud enough for Olive to hear.

“How about you mind the business that pays you. Talking trash like she doesn’t have the pull to have you fired. Stop being some miserable, bitches, because she got the man ya’ll wish ya’ll had,” Jessica said, shutting the nurses right on up. After getting her lunch out the refrigerator, she headed out the break room, heading to her car where she usually ate lunch and talked on the phone with her sister.

“Hey, Jessica… Thank you.” Olive said, stopping her. Since she and Kameron had come out as a couple, things had been bad. Not only had family transitions been hard, but the friends she did have at work seemed to have a sense of loyalty towards Camille.

“No problem.”

“Do you believe what you said in there?” She asked, causing a look of confusion to plaster on Jessica’s face. “You know, about them being jealous of my relationship with Kameron.”

Jessica looked at Olive and then shook her head. “Honestly, no. I just don’t like bullies. They too old to be doing that high school crap, but, listen, most of the staff has been here from the beginning. They’ve worked with Camille when she worked as the receptionist. It’s just as much of Camille’s blood, sweat, and tears in this office as Kameron’s. You need to gain some tough skin. Regardless of what you think, you were part of the reason for a marriage failure. Most of the women in here are married, and knowing you was Kameron’s side chick for however long before he divorced his wife, they’re not going to be cool with it. They will never like you or invite you out. Not because of their loyalty to Camille, but because they can’t trust a woman like you around their men.”

“I don’t want their men,” Olive said, offended. What happened between she and Kameron was the first time she had ever dealt with a married man, or any man that was in a relationship for that matter. In her mind, she wasn’t this homewrecking woman that everybody was trying to pin her out to be.

“And, I’m sure when Camille convinced Kameron to hire you, she didn’t think you would be the reason why their marriage went down the drain.
