'I must cook you all dinner,' I said. What was Renata up to?

Frau Beckenbender's face gave an almost imperceptible twitch. 'I think it might be better if I cooked this time. A potato dish perhaps? Now, if you would excuse me... '

I edged past her, hoping that the sheer bulk of my body would hide Renata if she cowered behind me.

Frau Beckenbender however glimpsed a strand of Renata's red hair. She raised an eyebrow.

'Hello,' said Renata, 'I'm the news assistant.'

She held up the toilet brush which she had wrapped with something resembling silver foil that had been stored in her handbag.
