Chapter Fourteen

“Do you think we should go back to couple’s therapy?” Sarah asked, getting under the covers.

“If you’d like. It’s pretty high on my list of things that I love to do.” I pulled her closer to me.

“Sarcasm isn’t the best form of communication when discussing the state of our marriage.” She placed her head on my shoulder.

“Is our marriage in such a state that we have to avoid sarcasm? I didn’t think we’d reached that level… again.”

“I tossed you under the bus in front of your entire family.”

I let out a bark of laughter. “That you did. Luckily for you, it worked. I actually feel somewhat better in an I can’t believe I said all that shit kinda way.”

“You never told me about that dream you have about your mom.”

“It’s not something I like to talk about. Thinking my mom wanted me dead because I was such a huge disappointment. That’s a hard thing to live with.”

“I don’t think it’s true, though. I think you terrified your mom.”

I leaned down to look into her eyes. “How so?”

“She knew you were better than she was.”

“Ha! I sincerely doubt that.”

Sarah’s head popped up. “No, seriously. She tried to beat you down. In every way possible, aside from actually killing you, and you didn’t let her. Yes, you struggled. You made poor decisions. But, once you righted the ship, you stayed true to yourself. Look at Peter. He went into the family business instead of being a pilot, and we need to stick a pin in that, because that was weird. But, you chased your history dream, incurring the wrath of your mother. Not many would have been able to give your mother, who was a force to be reckoned with, the middle finger like that. It wasn’t like you knew your father and perhaps Peter in his own way were silently cheering you on. You did it all on your own. By the time I met you, you were nearly done with your PhD. No one can ever take away your accomplishments, Dr. Petrie. I think deep down, your mother may have admired you.”

This thought struck me. “Do you really think so? I mean, I’m not still seeking her approval. Or, I don’t believe I am, but that would be ironic—no, that word is misused all the time. It would be interesting if that were the case.”

“Only you would toss in how ironic is misused while contemplating whether or not your mother actually loved you.”

“Loved?”

“Yes. In her really fucking bizarre way.” Sarah climbed on top of me. “Women like your mother don’t truly understand the feeling, but I can’t imagine your mom not loving you, because you really are the most amazing person.”

“Aw.” I cupped the right side of her face. “You’re projecting your feelings onto her. It’s something we all do, according to my therapist.”

“Let’s find a new therapist.”

“Do we really have to go to couple’s therapy?” I sighed. “I think we’re doing okay.”

“You didn’t tell me until today how much it hurts you when I don’t let things go.
