CHAPTER 3

LUKAS

A million feelings were competing for dominance in Lukas’s body and mind as he rushed out of the cabin and into the snow.

Did he want to be alone the rest of his life? That man was most definitely his mate—the urge to let Raul have his way with him was too strong to pretend otherwise. So then why was he running?

Instinctually, he shed his human skin and flexed his muscles in his reindeer form. After all, what better shape to run away from a wolf in than a reindeer?

The snow crunched beneath his hooves as he galloped into the woods. There was nowhere to go but back down the mountain from the lodge, and the downward slope helped Lukas to gain speed as he ran.

Lukas let his thoughts come and go like the trees and snowflakes that rushed past his vision: Raul, the devilishly handsome mountain man. Raul, the fiendish wolf who was so clearly trying to seduce him. Raul, his newfound mate.

No, no, no! His mate was supposed to be someone strong and kind, someone well-read who wore suits to work and attended important galas. Someone cultured and stylish who would sweep Lukas off his feet and carry him off to live together in his penthouse.

Not a wolf who lived in the woods and wore flannel.

But deeper still was the worry that, once his mate saw him in his true form, he wouldn't want him anymore. A runt of a reindeer was bad enough, but a reindeer with droopy ears and antlers like a first year?

Lukas was sure his mate would turn away in disgust.

As he ran, he passed the sign for Black Rock Ravine. In the heavy snowfall, Lukas realized that he wasn't sure exactly where the forest ended and the ravine began.

Suddenly, before he even noticed it, the woods opened up and a long, icy ledge shot out in front of him. His eyes widened in panic, and his heart jumped in his chest. At the last minute, he tried to turn around, but the edge of the ravine was coated with ice and his hooves slid clumsily on the slick surface.

Before he even realized it, he was falling.

He shifted back into his human form as he slid off the cliff, seeing a huge grey wolf in the distance, bounding out of the woods toward him.

Lukas called out to Raul as his hands snagged a protruding root on the edge of the cliff. He was hanging from the steep cliffside, feet struggling to find a ledge to stand on. Paws padded carefully down the slope toward him as his freezing fingers began to lose their grip.

From a higher vantage point, the wolf stood above him. His amber eyes pierced Lukas to the core. More than fear for his life or fear from the predator before him, Lukas was afraid that he had lost his mate after waiting so many years to finally find him.

So what if the man wore flannel?

He had been stupid, absolutely stupid to freak out like that.
