“So how’d you talk Horatio into letting you go outside at night?” Paige asked the next night.

“I wore him down with my shy smile and good looks.”

She tossed her head back and laughed. Her dark waves of hair tumbled over her shoulders. “Look at you, using all that charm you’ve got. I knew you could do it.”

I forced a smile to my face. Truth be told, the past day had been more challenging than I’d expected with the hallucinations taking effect. I’d imagine that I was standing beside a wall, and when I’d go to lean against it, I’d find nothing but air.

Do that a few times and you get skeptical real quick when it comes to walls—and other things.

But this was real. Paige and I were outside. It was nighttime, and we were sitting on the back deck. Horatio had taken a group out hunting for the werewolf. Since he wouldn’t let me track the creature, the next best thing was knowing that he was doing it. Matt had also gone with them, and I knew Matt would tattle if anything strange happened.

Paige grabbed my hand and squeezed it. “How do you feel?”

“Groggy. Like I’m underwater.”

A pained look sliced across her face. “I wish all of this was over.”

“Me too.”

“I know you do. Of course. It’s selfish of me to want this for myself. I want it for you, too. I want you to be done with this, and I want you back the way you were—grumpy.”

It was my turn to laugh. I motioned to my lap, and she rose from her chair and climbed on top of me, hooking her arms around my neck.

She smelled good. She felt good too, all silky and soft—both her clothing and her skin. My heart tightened just looking at her. Never, not ever had I experienced these feelings with anyone but Paige. I’d had other girlfriends before, yes, and whom I’d loved very much. But Paige made my chest constrict, made it feel like a hand was squeezing the life from my heart—in a good way.

She made me want to live.

And in turn I wanted to.

“It must be killing you that Horatio’s hunting the werewolf and not you.”

I sighed and slumped back onto the chair. “It wouldn’t if I wasn’t reminded of it.”

“Sorry.” She walked her fingers up my chest. “Have you been feeling okay?”

I shrugged. “As well as I can. Horatio hasn’t told me any more about what happens next. Am I supposed to kill another withering for the third dose? Is there a third dose?”

“A little transparency would be nice.” She pressed her lips to my forehead. “You’re doing an amazing job of staying positive.”

I tipped my head back and held her gaze. “If it’s due to anything, it’s due to you.”

“I like to think so.”

I smiled and drank in the sight of her. Paige was what made all of this worth it. Knowing that she was waiting for me was what pushed me. If it wasn’t for her, I might’ve succumbed to the withering’s pull long ago.
