CHAPTER TEN

Thank goodness Ned was sitting by his phone wide-awake and bushy tailed at that godforsaken hour of the morning. He picked up on the first ring.

“Come get me. I want to go home.”

He could tell from my tone that something had gone wrong.

“Are you OK? Did he hurt you?”

“Just come get me now.”

Somehow he got from our home to the house in nineteen minutes. It was the longest nineteen minutes of my life sitting like a slattern on their couch and listening to them fuck in the other room.

I saw the headlights of our family Subaru finally pull into the driveway and silently I let myself out the front door as Ned gallantly came up the steps to my aid.

Ned stayed silent. He understood. I wanted to go. No talk. No explanations.

Without a word we drove back down the sloping road. He kept on glancing over at me. Furtive looks. Checking my face, checking my wellbeing and also a few weird glances aimed at my crotch. He put his hand over and flipped up the hem of my baby doll.
