Did You Know?

When the first statue of Raffles was unveiled, the fact that it was bronze led many Singaporeans to think that Raffles was dark-skinned.

Asian Civilisations Museum. . . .

Facing out over the Singapore River next to the Parliament Complex is the Asian Civilisations Museum. Formerly known as the Empress Place Building, this majestic colonial-era gem was built in 1865 as the East India Company’s courthouse. It became a venue for historical and cultural exhibitions in the 1980s before being completely renovated in the 1990s to reopen in 2001 as one of the city’s most beautiful museums. It is home to a fascinating collection of Asian arts and antiquities, all laid out in carefully thought-out and well presented exhibition spaces. It also plays host to visiting overseas exhibitions from time to time.
