Chapter Twelve
Tank unwrapped his brisket sandwich and groaned with happiness. âThis is a real treat. I donât get over to that joint nearly often enough.â
âIâm right there with you,â said Eric. âMy second lunch of the day. Donât tell Sylvia.â
Eric had pulled pork, baked beans, and coleslaw. Tank had fried mushrooms and grilled corn on the cob. Lynn had an encyclopedic memory for repeat customersâ favorites. I got my burnt ends without being asked.
After we were halfway through our sandwiches and having a little breather, Tank asked, âI assume this largesse comes with a price.â
âI might need a little more help on the Blazevic case,â I said, sliding over the container of homemade pickles that were Nedâs favorite thing.
Tank took one and said, âWorth it. Whatâs up? Have you got the ladyâs details?â
âNothing that good,â I said. âI want to know if you have anything on Steve Olsen.â
Tank finished a pickle, wiped his hands on a napkin, and then got on his computer. âNothing springs to mind. Did he sell that trunk to Mika?â
âHe did.â I told them about my encounter with Steve, and the two of them were stunned.
âMaybe he had a stroke,â said Eric.
âI didnât think of that,â I said.
âStrokes donât make you spin on the floor,â said Tank. âThat guyâs full of it.â
âWhat did Leo say?â Eric asked, glancing around, but Leo hadnât come with me. Heâd gone to see if he could hear anything at the Olsen house. I donât think he would normally have agreed to eavesdropping, but Steveâs performance and disrespect helped me talk him into it.
âNothing. He doesnât know what that was about, but he doesnât think Steve will tell me what was in the trunk.â
âYou could call in Larry,â said Tank.
Eric chuckled. âLibby Forest and Larry Fischer, the dream team.â
âYou joke, but Iâve considered it,â I said.
âIn all seriousness, Lib, I donât think heâll tell you. Larry or no Larry,â said Eric. âIf heâs willing to do that in public, itâs a secret heâs going to keep at all costs.â
Tank nodded. âIâd still think about calling in Larry, but youâre probably right. Scaring wonât be enough, and you donât want Larry to actually beat him up.â
âI donât, but what other recourse do I have?â
âLetâs see,â said Tank. âIâm not seeing anything on either Steve or Hugo. Theyâve never been on our crime report. At least not since we got it searchable on the computer, but I donât see either of them committing a crime.â
âSteve did something,â said Eric. âWhy else would he try to hide what was in the trunk?â
âCould be a lot of reasons,â said Tank. âMy best guess is monetary gain. He wants to sell whatever it was or he already has. It was probably questionable.â
âStolen goods,â I said. âJess thought there might be money from a bank robbery. That sounds nuts, though.â
âI donât know,â said Tank. âThey found a safe on Storage Wars that was chock-full of money.â
Eric nodded. âAnd there was the video collection. Fifty grand.â
âSteve doesnât seem so stupid for buying the units now,â I said.
