Occasionally we pass ruined farm buildings, timeless in their derelict state with weathered, timbered beams pushing out through tumbled blocks of pale green, lichen-covered stone. Some of them would certainly provide temporary refuge if required and I would guess that these places might be frequented by local shepherds now and again when the weather suddenly turns. The path leads down into the Vallon d'Armina, through which flows a small stream from the Col Sapin that sits at 2,436 metres high up to our right. Physically, I have been feeling pretty good. Although the regulation morning ascents that generally form the pattern of each day's walking have been tough and arduous, the physical and mental exertion of the climb soon evaporates, and today's section has been a delight, much of it a gently undulating and undemanding traverse along the flank of the Mont de la Saxe. My rucksack feels fine and measurably lightened after dumping a pair of thick shorts and a couple of books back at the Rifugio Elisabetta. Rupert, however, is still carrying half his house on his back although he too lightened his load by taking the opportunity back in Courmayeur to post home some of his more weighty items, namely his watercolour paints and some unneeded clothes. All the same, we reckon that Rupert's rucksack is almost twice as heavy as the rest of ours and I think he is feeling it at times.
