Chapter Twenty

~

G ags woke up after sleeping on a blanket in front of the king’s apartments.

“Time to get something to eat,” He Bin said as Gags looked at Pophius waking the last late sleepers while uniformed royal guards stood watching.

“We are relieved,” Pophius said. “Leave the blankets, and we will go back down to the servants dining hall for something to eat before we return to our inn to clean up and change clothes.”

The palace already looked cleaner than the previous day. The meal was much better than Gags had expected.

“I heard you boys protected his Majesty during the troubles,” a middle-aged cook said as she placed big bowls of food on the table. “We made sure you were well rewarded for your efforts. You get the royal treatment.”

Pepper yawned. “I’m happy to take my reward,” he said as another serving woman put a big mug of ale in front of him.”

She yanked the mug away. “That is unless you’d like some fruit punch,” she said, with a hint of mockery.

“No, no, no!” Pepper said, grabbing the drink. “I like this kind of reward.” He took a big swig, sighed, and then served himself a modest plate.

“Then I’ll have one of those after this,” Pepper said.

They had their fill and walked out of the palace, threading their way through a crowd of demonstrators. Gags worried that the revolution was back, but as they endured pats on the back and well wishes, it was clear the people were behind the king.

Gags felt better after the meal and a joint and muscle loosening walk to the inn. Galius waited in the lobby and jumped up when he saw them and presented Gags with his saddlebags including a full supply of crossbow bolts.

“I was able to liberate your things,” the lawyer said, “and got a tip on where your stepmother might be. She is still hiding in the city.”

“Maybe the assassin she hired is with her,” Gags said.

“You will see. It’s an old inn close to the east gate,” Galius said. “I’m heading back to Karkle Cross as soon as I lead you to them.”

“Give us a chance to change and wash up and then we can head east.” Gags said. “Do the rest of you want to come?”

“I don’t want to miss it!” He Bin said, with a grin, with the rest agreeing.

In a short time, Galius climbed into a waiting carriage while the rest mounted and followed Galius through the busy streets of Bashing. The inn was large, intended to shelter incoming visitors from the more heavily populated east side of Peria. It had, however fallen on bad times. Plaster was
