The change in Nate was one of the best things Thom could have imagined. Despite the obvious pain he felt at no longer having the children around, his step was instantly lighter; he joked and laughed again. It was enough of a reprieve that Thom was at last able to think of other things.
Most of the clan was intending to travel to Malmulla with Thom and Riddle, although Enara opted to stay behind to watch the camp. Rian and Piku remained behind as well, promising to have a celebration ready for when they all returned. Ronan and Romulus were initially meant to remain behind with the rest of the children, but they begged to be allowed along and Nadia relented.
The morning before they were all due to depart, Thom and Blaise were in the midst of grooming Constana and Fury, the stallion heâd taken a liking to, when Nadia wandered over to them. She was smiling to herself about something.
Blaise tossed his brush on the ground and walked over to her. âWhy are you smiling?â
Thom was too curious not to listen in, but he averted his eyes to give them the illusion of privacy.
âI have something to tell you,â she said, voice soft and conspiratorial. âAnd I can only hope youâre as happy as me.â
âWhat is it? Did you finally find more chocolate?â
âIâm pregnant.â
A jolt of surprise went through Thom and he glanced back over.
Blaise was gaping at Nadia. âYouâre what?â
âIâm pregnant.â
âM-mine?â he stuttered.
âNo, Nateâs,â she said, rolling her eyes.
Instead of replying, Blaise kissed her. Nadia wrapped her arms around his neck and he spun her in a circle. They broke apart, both laughing loudly, overcome with joy. But as Blaise held Nadia close, his eyes met Thomâs, and the guilt that brimmed inside them was impossible to mask.
Thom hadnât asked Blaise about his decision to leave his own children behind, but he was frustrated by the outcome and had more than a few opinions on the matter. Heâd assumed Blaise would bring his children along â and perhaps he had intended to. Only he hadnât, and much as Thom loved him, he judged him for it.
Family didnât get left behind. That was the whole point.
Blaise returned to Furyâs side a few minutes later, face drawn in thought.
âCongratulations,â said Thom.
âThank you.â
Thom leaned against Constana and regarded him thoughtfully. âYou all right?â
Blaise shook his head. âI left my children there,â he muttered. âHow could I do that?â
Thom didnât want to make Blaise feel worse when he was at last making the right decision, so he simply said, âIf you need anything, let me know.â
âDo you know anything that would help?â
âHelp in what sense?â
âIn convincing Sun to come with me.â
âYou should perhaps try to end her relationship with Stefan first,â said Thom softly. âBut Iâm sure sheâd consider coming.â
Blaise had gone stiff and was staring at him in shock. âWhat did you just say?â
Thom ran his hand over Constanaâs withers and tried not to make his surprise obvious. âYou didnât know?â
âTheyâre sleeping together?â
âHe started sleeping with her to get back at you.
