Chapter 19

Ellie was up early working on her flavours the next day, perfecting the marshmallow ice cream she was hoping to put on the menu next week. Did it need another flavour to complement it? Red would say so. Maybe freeze it extra hard, and offer it with hot chocolate sauce? It could work in a bowl, not a cone.

Plus, she was going to try some chocolate sprinkles for the coconut and honeycomb. Natalie had been right. That would take it up a notch and get everybody talking.

Just as everybody would be talking if the two of them took things further. Would Natalie be okay with that? After all, it wasn’t Ellie who the whole village had known all their life. She had no shading, no back story, whereas Natalie was the village sweetheart. If they took things further, the whole village would be watching. Were they ready for that?

At that thought, she winced. Natalie was free to do so, but Ellie still had Grace to sort out. Even though they’d been split for months, they were still tethered. Still had objects in common to sort. When she got some downtime, she needed to go to London to sever the ties once and for all. With Natalie now a possibility, that was more urgent than ever before.

Ellie got up and walked to her coffee machine, glancing up at the clock. 7.30am. There had been a slew of people looking through her window while she’d been sat at the back. Should she open earlier than 9am for the morning coffee crowd? Something to consider.

She ground the beans for her flat white, watching the dark liquid drip through. She heated the milk, then poured from a height, getting closer as the cup filled so the foam rose. As she finished, she shook the milk, then styled the top, forming a love heart. Coffee was all about details and precision, and Ellie wanted to get it right. The village already had a great coffee shop that adhered to those principles, but a little healthy competition never hurt anyone.

With caffeine coursing through her veins, she decided to try Grace again. She needed to know she was out of her flat before she contacted an estate agent.

Ellie jumped up and grabbed her Cotswold sweatshirt she’d bought in a fit of country living the first weekend she’d arrived. She slipped out the back door of the shop and into the fresh country air. She still wasn’t used to it, and it was always a pleasant surprise. The air here tasted sweeter, baked. She breezed past the local homeware store with an abundant array of ceramic frogs outside, past A Cut Above, where she spied Jen, pregnant with Natalie’s ex-husband’s baby. She shook her head. She still couldn’t quite believe how the village was interwoven. She walked across the village square with its rows of parked cars, down the side road, before ending up at the river.

Water always calmed her. If she was about to speak to Grace, she needed to be calm.
