I took it upon myself to gather evidence that I could take to the authorities. I was afraid that if I didn’t do something to protect myself, Matt would just continue to escalate his actions. When I let myself dwell on the situation, it didn’t seem like too big a leap to go from slashing tires to slashing my throat.

I hung around Matt’s neighborhood on Saturday, hoping he’d do something to lend credence to my accusations against him. He took a run, sat on his front porch reading a book and played basketball on his driveway with some buddies, but that was all. I returned on Sunday to take up my vigil. I was almost ready to give up when he left the house and strolled off down the street. I followed along, careful to keep out of sight.

Two blocks away, he walked up into a yard and sneaked around to a door on the side of the garage. I saw him fiddle with the lock and then slip inside. I dashed across the street and hid behind the hedge in the neighbor’s yard. A couple of minutes passed and then the main garage door opened. He was obviously stealing a car to go joyriding. At last, I had caught the bastard!

When he emerged, he wasn’t in a car. Instead, he was carrying a ladder. Moments later, the front door of the house opened and an elderly man carrying a glass of what looked like lemonade and a plate of cookies confronted him. While I watched, Matt took the lemonade, shook the man’s hand and then sat on the porch swing with him and began talking. Before I slunk away, I saw him set up the ladder and begin cleaning out the gutters.
