Chapter 24

CIA Headquarters, Langley Virginia

Elmore Craft had read Lisa’s report 4 times, each time he got more concerned. The team in the Republic of Ireland had found several possible locations for Jim Dempsey, if he was in fact still in Ireland. James Dempsey III had multiple holdings in the country including two distilleries in Dublin, a large warehouse complex on the docks in Ringaskiddy south of Cork on a large bay along the southeast coast and a large estate outside of Carrigaline in county Cork. They had not set eyes upon the younger Dempsey and security seemed unusually tight for normal business at all the locations. The private plane that had taken Dempsey to Ireland remained at the private aviation terminal at the Shannon Airport. The airport itself was 170 kilometers from Cork and 225 kilometers from Dublin which meant that there were hundreds of square kilometers in which the man could be hiding. Of course, he could have used a fake ID to board any number of other flights to any number of other countries as well.

As if that wasn’t bad enough Lisa’s report also noted that several of Svetlana Isikov’s associates had suddenly taken up residence at the Soviet consulate in Dublin. This tidbit of information came from Britain’s MI6, the CIA’s closest ally, who kept constant watch on activities in both Northern Ireland, which remained part of Great Britain and their independent cousins to the south. If Dempsey had been flipped or decided to sell the information he had in his head, the risk to agents and operations across the globe were severe.

Craft could tell by the level of detail in the report Lisa was taking the incident in Nashville personally, she had triple checked with all the CIA’s assets and even a couple of her own and had found no trace of Dempsey. She had added a request to travel to Ireland herself, but Craft didn’t want her that close. If Dempsey got a whiff that Lisa Tran was nearby he might go even further afield or worse yet decide to cut a deal with the enemy. Better to let the local team try and locate Dempsey before sending anyone to either bring him in or worse case, terminate him.

Director Craft picked up his phone and dialed Tran’s desk phone.

“Tran.”

“Lisa, I’m going to let the local team see if they can locate our missing person for now, keep your ear to the tracks for possible intruders.”

“Yes sir, but I think I could find him if I were there,” Lisa protested.

“I’m sure you think that, but I worry it could raise the interest of our adversaries, let’s see what shakes out in the next week or so. He’ll come up for air and when he does we’ll be ready.”

“As you wish,” her frustration showing.

“In the meantime, can you contact your friend at MI6 and get more info on the new arrivals in Dublin? Thank you,” and with that Craft hung up.

Lisa hung up the phone and pulled a thin phone registry she kept in a locked drawer in her desk.
