By the time dinner was over it was too late to sail the Tryphine home to St. John, so they decided to try out their soon-to-be living arrangements. Tonight would be a good test run. Marcus only hoped he could make Alexis feel comfortable.

He had been worried about her when she ran inside earlier. She looked so upset, but when she came back with Victoria she was calmer, and they had an enjoyable dinner all together. Marcus had given Matthew heck for grilling them, but Marcus also saw Matthew’s point—a spur of the moment marriage was so unlike him. Especially when he’d spent years saying he was never going to settle down.

It’s for Pepper and Chase.

Chase owed him big time.

Alexis had leaned her head against the window and was snoozing. She looked so peaceful. Almost like an angel.

Get ahold of yourself, man.

He parked the car at the marina lot and reluctantly woke Alexis up.

“Sorry,” she murmured softly.

“No need. It’s been a long day.”

He helped her out of the car and down to the Tryphine. He always had his guest berth set up, just in case Jonas came out to stay, so that was a blessing. He wouldn’t have to go digging for extra bedding and it was ready for her.

“This can be your room.”

“It’s lovely. Thank you.” Alexis sat on the edge of the bed.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

“How do you mean?”

“I was worried when you ran inside.”

“I was feeling ill. Victoria gave me some ginger tea and apologized for so many questions.”

“My brother did go over the top,” Marcus groused.

“It wasn’t just that,” she said softly.

“Oh?” he asked, squatting in front of her.

“You never told me you were such a ladies’ man before.”

“Does it matter?” he asked.

“I suppose not.”

Only he could tell by the edge in her voice it did.

He sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “After my fiancée left, I really didn’t ever want to settle down. Flings with tourists was the easiest option. They didn’t stick around and I didn’t get attached. It was perfect, but I haven’t done that in a long time. When my godson, Jonas, got sick and needed a kidney I focused all my energy on that. Chase, Pepper and Jonas needed me. You’re not cramping my style or anything. There hasn’t been a fling like that for close to a year.”

Alexis smiled. “I know I’m sort of invading your life.”

Marcus leaned forward and smiled up at her. “I like the company.”

And he did.

It wasn’t just the fact that he had been busy helping out with Jonas. He was also just tired of the pursuit. He was tired of the casual dating, but he was terrified of trying for anything more. He didn’t want his heart broken again.

It was too painful.

“Thanks again for all your help today,” she said, tucking an errant strand of blond hair behind her ear.

“No problem. Get some rest now. Doctor’s orders! We have to hit Immigration early tomorrow.”

Alexis nodded. “Aye-aye.”

Without thinking he stood, kissed the top of her head and then quickly left her berth.
