Chapter 10: Team Spirit Building: CAD

Kako clapped her hands together excitedly as we all sat at a boardroom table. None of us with an expression or a glint of enthusiasm of what was to take place. Carter had placed us in a “team-building exercise” as if that would take away the tension in the group. Kako was leading us as this was not something the P.A. did typically, so we didn’t have a structure for this kind of thing. I put my elbow on the table and placed my chin on my rolled fist, already bored. Kako had volunteered to be the leader. She’d claimed to Carter she knew what she was doing and had studied human group psychology. Dorian had his hand on my knee, stroking it with his thumb gingerly.

I looked at Kako. As per usual, she was just plain overdressed for this. She wore a tight, somewhat sheer pastel pink jumpsuit. Her hair had been braided. Some of her hair was tied into two buns, neatly on each side. There was a little bit more of a tender, softer expression on her face. Cassian slumped into the room; he was 10 minutes late. He stank of death and looked messy and tired.

“Ah, so since all of the CAD members have now arrived.” Kako looked at Cassian, and he sprang up.

“What the fuck was that?” Cassian held on to his left shoulder in pain. He rubbed it to ease the feeling.

“Just a taste of lighting,” Kako told him, “every action will have consequences. I do not permit tardiness in my classroom.” It almost sounded as if Kako had taken that line from a TV show.

“We are wasting time doing this. There’s a dangerous killer on the loose. We don't have any problems in our team,” Jonah announced, and an awkward blanket of silence fell at how oblivious Jonah was. Kako ignored him and began.

“Carter has given me a list of exercises that we will do today.” She held up some pieces of paper, and she read the first few lines. “We will begin with some ice breakers and get to know each other better,” Kako started.

“I’m pretty sure we all know each other,” Dorian commented, a hint of anger in his voice. Kako simply ignored him. Instead, Dorian shivered and whispered “ouch” to himself, implying he may have just had a taste of some electricity from Kako.

“Do you guys know a good icebreaker?” There was a pause. “A fat penguin!” Only Kako laughed at her joke. She swirled around on her heels and wrote all our names on the board. Rebecca at the top, Cassian after, Dorian below, and Jonah last. “Also, I will not tolerate any negative comments or arguments. I will increase the amount I hit you with. If you do not follow my commands, you will be punished by me at the end of the day. I’ll send you to the abyss, and trust me, it is not a fun place. Okay.” Her tone immediately changed from threatening to cheerful.
