CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

“Where’s my son?” Lawana asked, her eyes wide with fear.

“They have him,” Colorow said. “They have almost everyone.”

Lawana looked from him to me, unslung her rifle. “We have to go get Taylor.”

I hefted the shotgun in my hand. I was about to agree when Colorow spoke up. “We can’t. That’s why I came. It’s bigger now, and if we just storm in there and try to get Taylor out, we might all get killed.”

Before Lawana could ask, I did. “Bigger how?”

Colorow swiveled his head around as if checking for threats. He was obviously jumpy. “Makes me nervous, standing out here. Let’s go inside. Lots to talk about.”

ONCE WE’D SETTLED INTO SOFT chairs in Lawana’s living room, I asked Colorow to walk us through everything that had happened since we’d gotten separated the night before.

The big Ute ran his hands through his thick hair. “After we got the girls away, we took them to Linda’s, in town. Then the bikers came.” He stopped, coughed, coughed again. The frog in his throat wasn’t from sickness, but emotion.

I prodded him along. “What happened in town?”

“The bikers roared in. One group went straight into the clinic and shot Fred. Three times in the head. So much blood. Another group came in, and they argued a bunch, then they all got yelled at by that little white guy, Orval or whatever his name is. He made a phone call, and then both groups rounded up at gunpoint anyone walking or driving the streets and put them in Fred’s station and locked them up. Taylor wasn’t there at that point.”

“So how did he get there?” I asked.

“Not sure,” Colorow said, eyeing both of us. “Rob Goff, myself, and Joe Buffalo—another guy who was with us last night—got away, and we warned a neighbor of ours named Cordell, who lives just outside of town.” Lawana nodded, obviously knowing all these men, so Colorow continued. “The four of us agreed to meet up this morning at my hunting camp. When we did, Buffalo told us that he’d snuck into town earlier and saw a bunch of people from nearby ranches being herded down the street. Taylor was among them.”

“So where is he now?” Lawana asked, on the edge of freaking out.

Colorow held up his hand. “Just let me finish. There were a couple of foreign guys in town, too—one was dressed in nice clothes and holding a bullhorn. He made a speech in some kind of accent—I couldn’t make it out—to anybody who might still be hiding in a building. ‘Rats hiding in the rat’s nest,’ he called them. He said the town is sealed off. The fiber to the cell tower and the trunk cable for the landlines have been cut. Other measures have been taken. He said he wants his stolen merchandise—‘merchandise,’ that was the word he used. He also said that he’ll kill a hostage every hour until he gets answers.” He coughed again, and hesitated a moment. “Renee’s dead,” he blurted out.
