Randall and Jason arrived at exactly three-fifteen.

John introduced them to his crew and then said, “We’re going to do the closing illusion since this is the most technical one in our show.”

“That’s cool,” Randall said.

“This illusion is always performed with the assistance of an audience member. We’ll run through it first without the audience help so you can experience it firsthand. Then we’ll perform it a second time and if you don’t mind, Jason, we’ll have you play the part of the audience assistant. That’ll give Randall a chance to make notes or ask questions, as needed.”

They both nodded.

***************

After Randall programmed the closing illusion’s light and sound requirements, John had Dave play the audience member’s part. They presented the illusion as if it were being done in front of a live audience, with Randall manning the followspots.

“You know, I still have no idea of how the hell you did that,” Randall said, after returning to the stage.

John smiled and said, “Thanks.”

“What’s your plan for tomorrow?” Randall asked.

“In the morning, we’ll do the audience member routines. The only requirements for those are a followspot. Unless you feel the need to be here, I think you can skip it. I’d like to meet at noon, is that okay with you?”

“Yeah. I’ve some business to attend to in the morning so that’ll work out just fine.”

“Jason, can you be here at noon?” Randall asked.

“Yep,” he replied.

“Excellent. We’ll see you then,” John said.

After Randall and Jason left the stage, John and Dave stowed the metamorphosis illusion with the others in the secure backstage prop and fabrication room.

“What time do you want to start tomorrow?” Patty asked, after they returned.

John glanced at the control booth. The curtains were closed. Randall, he hoped, had departed.

“Is nine okay for everyone?” he asked.

It was.

When they reached the main lobby, John said, “We’re still on for dinner, right?”

“I’m the designated coordinator,” Maria replied. “I’ll call everyone in 20 minutes.”

“Can we make it a half-hour, Maria? I need to speak with Brad to let him know we’re on track for Wednesday’s opening. Sometimes he’s long-winded.”

“No problem,” she replied and then began laughing.

John turned and headed for private elevator on the opposite side of the lobby. When he reached it, he turned around, walked back to the lobby and then headed for the stairs that led to the control booth.

He knocked on the door. There was no answer. He knocked a second time and waited. There was still no answer so he opened the door—he still had Gary’s key—turned on the light and went inside.

The entrance to the alley was through a standard 32-inch hollow core door, the type used for a home’s linen and coat closet. The light switch was on the wall to the left of the doorknob. John flipped the button up, opened the door, and climbed the single flight of stairs to the fourth floor landing. The door, identical to the one in the control booth, was closed. He placed his hand on the doorknob and twisted it; the door opened inward.
