Wolf

The chatter ended over the mic tucked in Wolf’s ear.

Thankfully, he and Caleb had been close to the Phoenix office when the call came in about Havoc. They’d been able to pick up some mics and just in case, Wolf had grabbed his Glock.

“You think you’re going to need a weapon?” Caleb had side-eyed him.

“You never know.”

“You’re right,” Caleb had agreed and plucked up his own handgun and tucked it into the shoulder holster beneath his leather jacket. “I thought for once, I’d leave it behind, but that was just wishful thinking.”

Wolf had chuckled in agreement.

They took off from the Phoenix building in Oakland and headed through the Posey Tube to Alameda. The historical landmark was said to be the second oldest underwater tunnel in the U.S.

Starting at the west side of the city, as Noah had suggested, Wolf drove the truck up and down several blocks.

“Check down there,” Caleb said, pointing to a street they hadn’t gone down yet.

He turned his truck down the street and drove slowly. Keeping an eye on the road while looking for signs of the dog wasn’t easy.

“I’ll drive down to the end, then flip around so you can check this side.”

“Okay,” Caleb sighed.

Wolf reached out and lifted the younger man’s hand to his lips.

Caleb shot him a quick smile. “I love you.”

“I love you more.” Wolf returned Caleb’s smile and then turned his gaze back to the road.

“Hey, pull over. Let me ask this woman if she’s seen him.”

Wolf brought the truck to a stop and Caleb rolled down his window, holding out his phone with the picture of Havoc that Noah had sent to the team.

The woman looked thoughtfully at the picture for a moment. “You know, there’s some commotion going on on the next street over. I heard it from my backyard. You might want to check there.”

“Okay, thanks,” Caleb said.

Wolf pulled away from the curb and headed down and around the corner. Just as they hit the next block over, they saw flashing red lights.

“Anybody west of Franklin park?” Roscoe asked, rattling off an address over the mic.

“Frost and I are here,” Seth’s voice came over the mic.

Caleb looked at the GPS map on his cell phone and then pointed to the park on their left.

“That’s Franklin,” Caleb told Wolf.

“Caleb and I are here,” Wolf responded, touching the mic in his ear.

“The cops have a disturbance. Can you check it out?” Roscoe asked.

“Yeah, we know,” Frost growled over the mic. “Seth and I are already inside.”

Wolf punched the gas and pulled up behind two cruisers with their lights flashing. He and Caleb both pulled on badges—that hung on chains around their necks—to let the cops know they were Phoenix.

Their unit was designed to assist law enforcement when their hands were tied. Phoenix was frequently brought in when cases got messy or the cops needed plausible deniability, which was needed more than the average citizen even realized. Basically, Phoenix took care of the scum of the earth that law enforcement couldn’t due to bureaucratic bullshit red tape.
