Chapter Eleven
A lovely warmth made Jill sigh as she stirred. Sheâd never been so comfortable in this room before, even when using an extra blanket. It was still dark, and her deep sleep had been interrupted by an awareness of something uncommon, apart from the temperature. It was obvious she wasnât on her usual pillow, and then she remembered Zara was with her, and sheâd been resting her head on Zaraâs shoulder before falling asleep. Now her arm was stretched across Zaraâs body as well. She came fully awake upon realizing the uncommon sensation was coming from the weight of Zaraâs breast right above her hand. Normally, she would be terribly self-conscious being this close to anyone, let alone in such a personal position, but she couldnât bring herself to move. Apparently, nothing about her experience with Zara was normal. And thus far, sheâd been unable to explain it, even to herself.
For as long as she could remember, sheâd had a need to understand things, to figure out the why and how. Now, willing herself to think, she breathed in deeply, catching Zaraâs spicy, musky scent. As she did so, her hand contracted slightly around Zaraâs breast. She froze, her only thoughts wavering between being mortified at what sheâd done and a strange compulsion to do it again.
Zaraâs breasts were larger than hers, fuller, attractively so. Many times during the past months, when she should have been studying or working out the design of her project, her memory had unhelpfully supplied images of Zaraâs chest filling out her fatherâs sweater or the way her hips moved in that red dress and always the way her arms and shoulders flexed as she played. Earlier tonight, when Zara had stripped down to her clinging undergarments, Jill had been unable to look away from the shapely line of her hips, and the vision of dark nipples behind the thin material of her undershirt had made her pulse race. Lush was the word that had come into her mind, a term sheâd previously ascribed strictly to vegetation. Sheâd never thought of another woman, or another person, for that matter, in such physical terms. But it wasnât only that.
After Zara had disappeared, Jillâs world had become very silentâexcept for the piano music in her dreamsâand very cold unless she let thoughts of their kisses warm her. Sheâd been desperate to see her again, and sheâd told herself at first it was to thank her for what sheâd done. She owed Zara so much, but sheâd finally admitted that wanting to spend time with her again was also to explore whatever was between them.
When her father had finally uncovered Zaraâs whereabouts and had convinced her Zara was safe and recovering, sheâd worked to ignore the rejection sheâd felt, striving to fill the emptiness with Constance and Nelsonâs happiness. At their earnest request, sheâd agreed to patch things up with Clive, acknowledging that her anger at his carelessness had been dulled by Zaraâs continued absence, as had most of her other emotions.
