Beckford kept the vase in his

palace at Fonthill (hence the name)

and it resurfaced in 1882 at a sale

by Beckford’s heirs at Hamilton

Palace without its silver mounts.

The vase was then lost to public

view until it was rediscovered in

the 1950s and acquired for a small

sum. It is now in the National

Museum of Ireland.

While tracking the travels of the

Fonthill Vase is interesting in itself,

I find it particularly hard to imagine

that this vase is what spearheaded

the mountains of porcelain

exported from the East to the West.

The vase itself is not the finest

example of what potters were

capable of at this time. Don’t get

me wrong, it is still lovely, but the

flowers, which are a dimensional

applied aspect aren’t very refined

and the strings of a sort of beaded

texture seem to trail off with

unintentional endings; the overall

attention to detail in this piece

seems lacking. I love that there

was a point in the history of this

object where it was transformed

into a ewer with an added handle

and spout. I have pondered

how it was meant to function,

but realize that it likely was never

meant to actually function

as a ewer, but as an exotic and

valuable decorative object.
