HOW TO GET MAXIMUM DOLLARS FOR YOUR TRADE-IN

D o you think it is worth an hour of your time to get an extra $1,000 or more for your trade-in vehicle? It’s a rhetorical question but my experience is that the vast majority of car buyers will complain that they are not getting a fair deal from the dealer for their trade-in yet often do little work to enhance the value of their trade. Don’t leave money on the table. Here are some simple and straightforward actions you can take to determine what to reasonably expect for your vehicle on a trade-in and how you can maximize the amount the dealer will pay you.

Clean it and take pictures . At the very minimum, wash the exterior, vacuum and wipe down the interior, and take photos of your vehicle. For $100 - $150, you can get a local car detailer to do all this for you including an engine shampoo and deodorizer (especially important if you are a smoker) so your car looks its best and smells great. Then, look up your car’s Year, Make, and Model on autoTRADER or Cars.com and notice the photos that appear on the listings. Note the typical shots that each listing shows. Take the same shots of your trade-in vehicle. About a dozen will be plenty (half interior and half exterior shots). Use your smartphone. It’s easy and your smartphone takes excellent high definition photos.

Marketing Your Trade . Whether you are trying to sell your trade to a dealer or to a private buyer, they are both looking for the same things:

● What are the special features of the vehicle? Is it accident-free? One owner? Special equipment such as leather interior, heated seats, Bluetooth phone system, premium sound system, navigation/GPS system, DVD entertainment system, sunroof, alloy wheels, extended (transferable) warranty protection? Do you have all the service records for the vehicle? Did you have the vehicle rust proofed? Document these features in a short written description. With 12+ photos of your car plus the disclosures just mentioned, you can approach a few dealers online and get a pretty good idea of what they are willing to offer (if you are trading in your vehicle on a specific new car).

● Go to the manufacturer’s website for your vehicle (use Google to find the site) and look for specifications for the Year, Make, and Model of the vehicle you are trading. Usually you will find this information under the “Owners” tab where manuals, brochures, and spec sheets for prior model year vehicles can be found and downloaded. Find your Model and Year vehicle. You might discover facts about your car that you did not know. Determine your vehicle’s trim level as there may be a significant difference between the entry-level trim and the luxury version of your car.

● Get the vehicle’s service records . If you have not been keeping your service records in a file folder, go to any franchise dealer of your brand (if it’s a Ford, go to a Ford dealership) and ask them to pull the service records directly from the factory.
