Chapter Eight

Van ran as fast as he could from the house. The sounds of sirens coming toward him made him stop and hunker down behind a dumpster. He shook violently and wondered when the shaking would stop. He couldn’t believe he’d killed not one human, but two. It was something he’d never thought he’d ever have to do. But they’d kidnapped Parker, then threatened Tanner. For some reason, when the one on the stairs had shot Tanner, something deep inside Van snapped. His bear had coming roaring out of him like never before. All that mattered at that moment had been protecting Tanner. He didn’t understand it, but it had overwhelmed him. The shooter had been an easier kill than the man in the room who’d been trying to catch Parker. Then he’d begun hearing Tanner’s thoughts in his head. None of it made any sense at all, but it didn’t matter. Van wasn’t sure he’d stop shaking until he was sure Tanner was safe.

An explosion shook the neighborhood. Suddenly Van knew what Tanner had done to cover their tracks. “Tanner!” he cried out with his mind as a roar tore from his throat.

“I’m okay,” Tanner’s voice resounded in Van’s head.

Knowing Tanner was still alive helped drive some of the shaking out of Van. He still ran as fast as he could to where they’d left the van. He didn’t want them having to wait any longer than necessary for them to leave the area.

Van shifted to human as they reached the van. He put the backpack between the seats and quickly pulled his clothes on, then climbed into the driver’s seat, started the engine, and started the heater so he could get Parker out of the backpack and not risk his temperature dropping too low.

As soon as he flew out of the backpack, Parker went into the back of the van and shifted. “Damn, that was scary,” Parker said as he went through the bags of stuff they’d picked up earlier while they’d been in Denver. “Where is that bag of clothes I bought earlier?”

“Back there somewhere,” Van replied. He glanced in the mirrors and out the window, watching for Tanner to appear. Instinctively, he felt he’d relax more once Tanner was back with them. Even though he’d only known the werewolf for a few hours, he didn’t want anything to happen to him.

“Tanner’s one tough guy,” Parker said, then sighed. “Here it is.”

“You’ve got no idea. He jumped out of the van without me stopping so he could follow the Hummer you were in.” What Tanner had done was part of what inspired Van to jump from the neighbor’s roof into the room where Parker had been. It wasn’t something he’d have thought to do before that night. He felt like he needed to show Tanner he wasn’t afraid to take chances, too. Jumping off the roof had been really scary, but Parker and Tanner were counting on him, and he’d made it. Then he’d tackled the guy shooting at Tanner.
