Chapter Eleven

It was not the first time that Thomas wished he kept a horse rather than rent the occasional nag for a few guineas a month. He marched over the cobblestones with the sun arching over Basseterre like a rainbow of fire, cooking himself as he hurried toward the docks hoping his trunk had arrived and was stowed aboard.

There was little time and no telling when he would return. He had wasted enough tide stopping by the Barrow's cottage, but he simply could not take his leave without letting Miss Barrow know he would not keep their appointment. He certainly did not want her to think he'd forgotten about it. She seemed to revel in his praise and forget her stiff manners and opinions when she took up a foil. He was quite impressed with her progress.

By all accounts, Fitz had taught her well, and her younger brothers had certainly challenged her. If she were angry and in fear of her life, she would put up a good fight against a sloppy or overconfident man. Not that he could actually see her running anyone through. With an amused smile, Thomas suspected Miss Barrow would hesitate to wound someone if she stopped to consider whether or not it was proper.

She did see the world in black and white, right and wrong, but perhaps her time at sea and months in the Indies had begun to color her world. Not every gentleman was honourable, not every criminal guilty of anything more than trying to survive. Why even her own sister had turned the family on its head by absconding with a servant, but she sounded happy and in love. Fitz had certainly left those details out.

It all made sense now, mused Thomas. A sister had ruined the family's name among the ton and dashed all of Miss Barrow's chances to find a husband. He knew she wanted to find love. If she didn't care about her heart, she'd have no eyes for anyone else but Marsh, but she seemed to be stepping back.

Thomas nearly keeled over at what that could possibly mean for him. Someone from aboard the Defiant shouted, and he looked up to see the crew dart into action at the announcement that the captain was nearby. Lime-green water roiled around the pilings in a thick foam, and Thomas inhaled the familiar smell of fish and salt. He was anxious to feel the wind across his face. He needed it. To push out of this port past the other ships and their heaving masts. To escape to the horizon. To forget.... Well, he did not think so often of his parents now, but perhaps it would push Miss Barrow from his thoughts, too, so he did not continue dwelling on his private daydreams about her.

Marsh's arrival had surprised him this morning until he realized he'd interrupted a previously arranged call. Part of Thomas liked the idea of interrupting Marsh's plans, but another piece of him was sorry to have created a situation Miss Barrow would have to explain.
