Twenty-Eight
When I open my eyes, Gattacan is standing beside the bed, watching me, and for some strange reason I donât startle, or worry about how long heâs been in the room. I stare into his midnight eyes for a moment before pushing myself up to my elbows.
âIs it time?â I ask, stifling a yawn.
He nods.
Iâm still exhausted, but at least I got some rest, and my leg is a little better, thanks to the Laithlanner medic who attended to it yesterday. Iâm still in yesterdayâs clothesâno point in changing out of my Empyrean uniform if I have to go back home in it. Wearing anything else, or even cleaning up too much, would signal that I was rescued by someone, and not just any someoneâa Laithlanner. But attending to my leg was a necessity. Otherwise, who knows if Iâd make it home before an infection set in.
Still, I canât help but imagine how nice a hot shower would feel right about now.
I ease my leg off the bed and onto the floor, slipping into my dirty Empyrean boots. Gattacan reaches his hand out to steady me as I stand.
âThank you,â I say, taking it, his fingers gently bracing mine.
âThank you,â he echoes in a husky breath.
âFor what?â
âFor what youâre about to do.â Heâs still holding on to my hand.
I swallow, letting it go so that I can pull my hair up into a ponytail. As soon as I do, I remember what lies ahead. All the revelations the Grays shared last night flash through my mind like a lightning storm. Iâm a Light Keeper, like my father. But what does it all mean?
âI wouldnât thank me just yet,â I mutter.
Gattacan tilts his head to study me.
âI mean, I donât even fully understand what Iâm supposed to do.â I run my hand over the top of my head, attempting to smooth down any stray hairs that might be sticking up.
âYou will soon enough. These things take time.â He offers me his arm. âMy parents will tell you the plan over breakfast.â
I loop my arm through his, though the weight on my leg isnât nearly as painful as it was. Still, itâs nice to have his support.
âCashel is ready for you. He was fed and groomed last night,â he says, leading me out of the room.
âThank you. I was so tired, I shouldâveââ
âI told you heâd be fine. Iâm starting to think you donât trust me,â Gattacan says, a smile forming under his perfect angular cheekbones.
âThese things take time,â I joke. He chuckles, and his arm flexes against mine when he does.
