Aurelia Tertius, in his worst days working under Gaius Vindex, had never dreamed what he now witnessed would be possible.

Aurelia was a learned man, holding a degree in medicine among others. He’d spent a large portion of his life in universities, and to be hired on by one of the Great Families had been a dream. He and his wife had made a good life under these people. They’d never had children, but that was okay. They managed to stack a fair number of credits, see some of the universe, and there was love between the two of them.

He’d thought that would be enough – more than enough, truthfully.

Now…

Aurelia was having a tough time figuring out how he’d arrived at this place.

He kept trying to figure it out, focusing on his breath, closing his eyes, and thinking back to where this all started.

When did he first meet the twins?

Was it twenty years ago? Had their father sent them or was he already dead by that point?

A scream ripped through his conscious thought, pulling him away yet again from attempting to figure out how he’d put himself in this position.

The screams. They wouldn’t let him think. The twins and the Zelthari they now had—none of them would let him think, because if Aurelia could just do that, for just a little bit, he might be able to figure out…

“Aurelia, would you please go get the Zelthari some water?” Lucius asked. “He’s more than parched.”

Aurelia opened his eyes. He didn’t know how long they’d been closed, but he now felt the sweat dripping down his face. He hadn’t even known he was perspiring, but as he looked at the Zelthari, he understood why.

Aurelia’s gaze lingered on the Molecular Disruption Field encasing the alien. The field was a surreal, almost beautiful, yet deeply unsettling sight. It shimmered around the Zelthari like a translucent cocoon, its iridescent hues shifting continuously as if a bright sunny day shone down on oil that lay atop a lake.

Aurelia’s stomach churned at the sight.

He knew what was happening to the man, and as if the Zelthari had read his mind, he cursed in his native tongue.

"Kraznak fal tor!"

Aurelia watched the field undulate rhythmically as if it were breathing. At its edges, the colors bled into the surrounding air, creating a disorienting effect that made it hard for Aurelia to focus. It was like watching a mirage…

Except this was no optical illusion but a sophisticated piece of technology designed for pain and subjugation.

Aurelia's eyes moved to the Zelthari, its body writhing under the machine’s influence. The equipment hummed with a low, resonant frequency.

Science and sadism in one piece of technology, the doctor thought.

To the onlooker, it appeared as a shimmer in the air, a distortion that twisted light and reality in equal measure. Inside this haze, the Zelthari’s molecular structure was being relentlessly assaulted. The field's energy worked at a subatomic level, disrupting the bonds that held his cells together. It was a form of torture that bypassed flesh and bone, striking directly at life’s fundamental building blocks.
