Although I faced these problems, which I shared with other asylum seekers, my plight would have been a lot more difficult had it not been for the generous support I received from friends and my wider social network. I developed good relations with people in non-governmental organisations created to help asylum seekers and refugees to integrate into the community. Among the more notable organisations were the Church of England, Pentecostal Churches and other Faith Bodies, the Refugee Forum and the Nottingham Black Partnership. I recall there were lots of asylum-seekers roaming the streets of Nottingham with no clear goals and nowhere to go to access services.

In the next chapter, I will discuss how the government’s unwelcoming and ‘hostile asylum environment’ affected my health and general well-being. I will also discuss in more detail how my social network and organisations like the Refugee Forum, Nottingham City of Sanctuary and faith agencies helped me and other destitute asylum seekers whose needs were neglected by the immigration authorities. Without their help, further damage would have been done to our health and the cultural and integration challenges would have been insuperable. They tried to understand our needs, treated us with respect and dignity, provided us with food, clothing, counselling and moral support, helped us to understand our rights and entitlements to services, and made it easier for us to adapt to our new environment. I am deeply grateful to these kind people and to their organisations. I will forever be indebted to them.
