Chapter Thirteen

“Are you happy with these?” Griffin asked as they came out of the electronics shop.

“Yes, they’re perfect. Once they are up, we both can use our phones to monitor what’s happening there, anytime day or night. Night vision, infrared, they’ll be so useful.”

“Did you say they alert you too?” Griffin asked.

“Yes, the app will send a notification.”

Griffin nodded and they continued walking back towards the car park. Griffin had enjoyed following Bronte around in the shop and just spending time with her. She didn’t want it to end. Ask her for dinner, Griffin told herself. But she was nervous. Griffin had a lot of experience with women, but not like this.

Usually she met them in clubs or on the beach while travelling, and both parties generally wanted to move to the endgame quickly. They didn’t want to walk around the shops or go to dinner.

“Bronte?”

Bronte turned to her. “Yes?”

Griffin gulped. “How’s your ankle?”

“Much better. A bit achy after walking around the shop, but the crutch helped. I only need the one now.”

Griffin nodded. “Good, good.”

Ask her, you fool.

Instead of listening to her inner voice, she said, “They’ve handled the snow a lot better in town, haven’t they?”

The snow was all cleared from the pedestrian walkways, piled up by the sides of the pavements and roads, and the leftover snow had turned to slush after being treated with salt.

“They have the right equipment, I suppose, but you all did a good job,” Bronte said.

Now, now, now!

Griffin gave herself a huge mental kick up the backside.

“Um, Bronte, since we’re just going back to our empty cottages, do you want to get some dinner before we go home?”

“I’d love to.” Bronte smiled.

“Great.” Griffin kind of squeaked with excitement. Keep it cool. “Where would you like to go?”

They stopped and Bronte looked around. There were a lot of chain restaurants in the retail park where they were. Indian, Chinese, pizza, fish and chips.

“What about pizza? Pizza is my guilty pleasure.”

“Pizza it is then. Let’s go.”

Griffin offered her arm to Bronte, and she took it. She felt such a buzz. This was going to be fun.

But in the very back of her mind she said, You’re leaving in the new year.

But Griffin dismissed it quickly.

Clementine was in Isadora’s study upstairs looking through the old papers. Some of them were very delicate, and she had them inside protective wallets.

She saw the oldest and smiled.

“Lucy, come and see this, you’ll like this.”

Lucy was at the bookshelf going through the old steward’s books. She came over and took a seat beside Clementine. “What is it, Aunty Clem?”

“This is the original paper granting the Rosebrook lands to our family.”

Lucy’s eyes went wide. “From King Charles II?”

“Yes,” Clementine said with a grin, “do you want to see?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Put these white gloves on first, okay, and I’ll tell you all about it.”

Clementine took the precious document out of the folder. It was in another protective plastic sleeve, and she carefully took it out. “Can you remember what you learned
