CHAPTER 6

GARY SLEPT fitfully having strange dreams. He woke a number of times in the night with the strongest feeling that his grandmother Florence’s spirit was present in the bedroom.

He was sure he briefly saw the image of her standing over him on a couple of occasions when he opened his eyes. But perhaps it was just a dream, surfacing in the present turmoil of his mind.

Early next morning the trio ate breakfast of crisp breads and tomato soup.

“I usually like bacon, egg, mushrooms and beans when I’m staying away,” Gary joked, trying to lighten the pervading, solemn atmosphere. They laughed.

Their laughter was interrupted by the distant noise of an engine.

“Sounds like a plane,” said Laura. They listened intently.

The sound grew rapidly nearer, now more distinctly chopping the air.

“It’s a helicopter!” Nikki was alarmed.

They rushed to the kitchen window and saw a helicopter descending on to the field in front of the cottage, grazing sheep scattering for their lives.

“They’ve found us!” the intelligence officer shouted as she reached for her gun on the kitchen counter. “Quick, get into the back!” Instinctively Gary and Laura ran to the living room.

Nikki watched the helicopter landing in the field. Three men in black combat outfits jumped out armed with automatic weapons. They raced towards the cottage, leaping over a barbed wire fence bordering the field, and across the gravel driveway to the front door.

The lead man fired repeatedly at it then kicked the door open. He entered firing off more shots, but seeing no-one ceased shooting. Cautiously he entered the kitchen on the right. It was empty. He turned and crossed the hallway to the dining room, firing off more shots as he approached. He peered in and entered, gazing round the room, but saw only empty tables and chairs.

The beating of the chopper blades outside dominated the air, filling the cottage. The intruder seemed to be growing uneasy, dropping his guard a little and wondering if the cottage had been abandoned. He continued his search, slowly walking down the hallway towards the living room, his gun pointing the way.

The understairs cupboard door suddenly flew open, Nikki was crouched. Before her enemy had a second to react, she opened rapid fire splaying bullets across his chest and head. His body jerked and flew backwards with the impact, crashing heavily on to the floor, his weapon clattering down beside him.

Next moment Nikki heard rapid gunfire and shattering glass from the living room behind her. She rushed in to see another operative spraying the glass patio door with bullets. At the same time she caught sight of Gary and Laura crouched under the dining table. The operative was almost into the room, starting to aim at Nikki. She threw herself on the floor, rolling over to avoid his gunfire. She attempted to swing her gun round for a shot at him, but he was moving too quickly towards her. He fired, but the bullets seared across the side of the room. Gary had sprung at his legs from under the table, toppling him over.
