CHAPTER 13

August wanted to enjoy the early morning horseback ride, but it was impossible with his brother, Drake, marveling at the fact he was on a horse at all. Out of all his brothers, Drake was supposed to be the most reticent, but apparently married life had made him chatty. Every fifteen minutes or so, he just had to comment on how great it was that August still remembered how to saddle a horse, adjust a bit, deal with an ornery animal, or coax his mount into a canter. August felt like spurring poor old Eddie into a gallop and riding back to his trailer where he could slam the door on Drake’s face.

“Come on, August, you aren’t glad to be back here doing this?” Drake asked.

August ground his teeth. “What? Listen to you chatter incessantly?”

Drake chuckled. “Riding again. Wearing real boots instead of sandals. Getting in touch with your roots.”

“What I really wanted was to enjoy a little peace and quiet,” August snapped.

The biting tone didn’t deter Drake at all. “All I’m saying is it is nice to have you back,” he said.

August sighed. “Thanks,” he grumbled.

Drake nudged his horse in front of August’s and stopped Eddie. “All right. What is with you? Why are you so unhappy?”

“I’m not unhappy, just surly. Isn’t that what everyone calls us Rolstons?” August soothed Eddie before he bit Drake’s mount.

“There’s surly, and there’s miserable. Just tell me what’s bothering you,” Drake insisted.

August expertly steered Eddie around him and continued down the trail. Soon it would loop around the edge of his property and return them to the trailer. He was longing for a cup of coffee. “Nothing is bothering me but you,” August said over his shoulder.

“Is it Topher?” Drake asked. It was always a safe bet that Topher, August’s business partner, had made him mad.

“No,” August grunted.

“Theo?” Drake asked, bringing his horse back side-by-side with Eddie.

August’s lips almost twisted into a smile. Part of him was glad to have Drake chirping around him like the annoying little brother he always had been. It felt good to have people who cared enough to annoy him. It was especially nice to have someone in his life who automatically knew the most likely things that upset him.

“Nah,” August finally admitted. “I think I might like Hetty too much to let our feud go on.”

Drake beamed. “Theo feels the same.”

August faked a retching sound. “Sorry, I’m physically unused to agreeing with Theo on any topic.”

Drake laughed. “Funny, because the two of you used to be the closest.”

August wasn’t ready to rehash his childhood alliances or arguments and again tried to ride around Drake. Unfortunately, his younger brother was still not done with his irritating line of inquiry.

“So, if it’s not Topher and it’s not Theo, then it must be work?” Drake guessed.

“Wrong again.” At this rate, August despaired of ever getting a cup of coffee.

“Woman troubles,” Drake decided.

This time it was August that wheeled his mount around and blocked his brother. “What makes you say that?”

Drake raised a triumphant eyebrow.
