"Where did you come from?"

"How did you get here?"

"How did you manage to get into the fortress?"

"How did you find us???"

I answered the barrage of questions and told them my story, what had happened to me from the time I ran away from Selvino until that very day. Griver already knew that I had run away, because that’s what they told him when he came to fetch me from Selvino. But he was astounded that a twelve year old boy could have the guts and skills to travel all that way on his own, and find his way into this secret place all on his own.

As a matter of fact, my success at getting into the ‘secret’ fortress created a problem. Every single person there was fully accounted for because everything had been meticulously organized. Griver informed those in charge that another person had joined his family group. The camp organizers were members of the Jewish Brigade that had fought in Europe, military men that had become envoys for the Haganah and vigilantly maintained the secrecy of the fortress and of the illegal Aliyah Bet immigration. So how could there be another person who was not on the lists? It wasn’t possible! They asked me the same questions over and over again: How did I know about the place, how did I get here, how did I get in, and so forth. I think the fact that I was able to breach their cloak of secrecy is what hurt their pride the most. In the end, despite being so young, and despite the ‘wrong’ way I had entered the fortress, they agreed that I could stay. I suppose Griver pulled some strings and everything worked out.
