Chapter 14

I wrapped my arms around my body. Even without the wind, the night was cool. When the breeze came up, just a gentle one lightly tugging at my clothing, I shivered. I really needed a jacket or a sweater or something to help me keep warm. I smelled the grass and the faintest hint of horse blown towards me on the breeze.

Byron stood there, studying the gate, the light still bright enough for me to see the frown on his face as he did so.

“I take it you closed it again when you came through?” I asked. Byron had the key code so he could come and go as he liked. I couldn’t imagine that he hadn’t closed it. He was the one always talking to me about safety and making sure things were locked and closed up.

“I did,” Byron said, walking around, looking at the ground. I didn’t follow him. I knew he was looking for tracks. The cement drive was mostly clear, a bit of mud, but there’s nearly always some mud between me, Daisy, Win, and Morgan, not to mention visitors who come and go, most calling the house so Morgan can open the gate for them. The mud wasn’t a sign that someone else was there.

“We should go back and look at the video. See who opened it. And how.” I said.

Byron glanced at me. “You go. I’m calling this in. I don’t like that someone tried to hit your car and then we find the gate open.”

I hurried up the lane. I knew Byron was watching. There were plenty of trees around so if someone had gotten in, they plenty of places to hide. They could be watching for a chance to attack. I hoped that I had time to scream before they did.

I was running before I knew it, thankful that I wear black athletic shoes to work. They were comfortable and looked fine with my slacks. Now and then I wore Mary Janes with a skirt, but always flats. If I had to, I could usually run.

That wasn’t the reason for my fashion choices, or lack thereof. I needed to be able to move around the treatment table. I also like to be comfortable. If that meant I could run in whatever shoes I wore, so much the better, considering how often my life had been in danger since I returned home.

I made it to the house. Morgan poked his head out almost immediately.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

“The gate’s open and Byron remembers closing it,” I said, panting slightly. I’m not in good running shape apparently. I ought to do it more often, but then closed that thought off. I’m not big on running.

“Do I need to call the police?” Morgan asked.

“No. But we do want to watch the security footage from the time Byron came through until now,” I said. “He’s calling this in. He doesn’t like that someone almost hit me and now the gate’s open.”

Morgan nodded and followed me to the office.
