International Classification of Diseases (ICD) A systematic arrangement of all specific names, diagnostic labels, etc. for health-related conditions (i.e., diseases, injuries, and routine procedures) into groups according to their mode of causation, or body system affected, with numbers assigned to each. The terminology and details of grouping are determined by internationally representative experts who report to their governments and to the World Health Organization, which publishes periodic revisions at intervals of approximately 10 to 15 years. The 10th revision, called the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10), was approved by the World Health Assembly in 1989, published in 1990 and had come into general use in most nations by 2003. This has 22 chapters and more than 1,000 specific categories with room for expansion. IDD-11 was released in 2018. See http://www.who.int/classifications/icd/en/.
