Charley turned to Clara. “Are there usually pastries at your breaks?”

“No, but it’s funny you should ask. Dr. Wells wasn’t the only one being punished. Dr. Maloney—Brett Maloney—was, too. Super had ordered him to bring in pastries for the nurses.”

“That’s a strange punishment, isn’t it?” Charley asked.

“Well, it’s because he does deliveries for Mrs. Zammit’s bakery on Fridays. We were all pretty excited about it.” She looked thoughtful. “Maybe that was why Dr. Black was here, although I can’t imagine her nipping a pastry meant for the nurses. I might expect it from some of the other doctors, but not her.”

“I don’t remember seeing a pastry box in the lunch room, do you?” Charley asked Mark.

Mark shook his head. “What would it look like?”

But Charley knew exactly what it looked like. Brett Maloney had delivered one to her home earlier this morning. She turned on her heel and ran back to the waiting room.

“What’s up?” Mark said, trotting beside her.

“Where’s Freddie?” she asked, looking around the empty room.

“And Grace?” Mark added.

Charley hurried over to a telephone box, fishing for a coin from her pocket. She tapped her foot impatiently as the phone rang and rang, but there was no answer.

Dammit!

She slammed down the receiver as Grace shuffled back into the waiting room and slumped down in a chair.

“Do you have news?” Mark asked her.

She nodded and then her face crumpled in anguish.

Charley’s heart contracted sharply. Oh no, not Laine.

She looked around frantically. She had to get home, but she couldn’t leave Grace at a time like this.

Where was Freddie?

“It doesn’t look good,” Grace said, sobbing into Mark’s shoulder. “She’s still unconscious and they’ve had to put her on a mechanical lung.”

At least she is still alive.

“Grace,” she said gently touching her friend’s shoulder. “I need to go home. It’s an emergency. I don’t want to leave you, but…”

Grace pushed away from Mark and gave Charley a brave smile. “It’s fine. They say I can, maybe, see her in a bit—once they’ve got her settled in a room.”

“I’ll stay with her,” Clara said, sitting down beside Grace. “She’s one of us. There are lots of us here who will keep an eye on her to make sure she’s okay.”
