âPut your train up!â Mere Owa exclaimed, cackling like an old hen.
Gerry rolled her eyes and folded her arms across her chest with a huff. Playing dominos, Mexican train specifically, was not what sheâd expected when sheâd signed up for this assignment. Signing up wasnât the right phrase. More like jumped at this assignment. Anything to get away from that hospital.
Nicky was sufficiently distracted for the moment, slapping his train onto his column of dominos with a hiss of disapproval. As he studied his blocks and those on the board, he swatted a hand at the side of his head. A second passed before he realized that the movement near his ear wasnât a bug, but a pixie.
âHey! Thatâs cheating!â He narrowed his eyes at Trina. âKeep your pets on your side of the table.â
Gerry watched Trina bat her eyelashes at him and giggle. Then she motioned the pixies back to her shoulder. She wasnât jealous about the interaction between the lovely faery and her husband. Nicky was a flirt, and Gerry was well aware of that. She might have been a tad envious of Trinaâs beauty, but she certainly wasnât jealous.
She glanced down at the paunch in her lower belly. Try as she might, she couldnât seem to get rid of it except perhaps with the use of her magic. But she couldnât use her magic because of the promise sheâd made to Nicky years ago that she wouldnât use her powers to alter her looksâ¦except professionally.
Supposedly breastfeeding would have helped with the baby-belly, but her body wouldnât produce enough milk. Two babies screeching in starvation had nearly been her undoing until Kristana had finally convinced her to try formula. Sheâd never been so relieved in her life.
And had never felt so inadequate.
Swallowing, she slid her crossed arms lower to hide her stomach. Nicky was fidgeting, wiggling in his seat. He finally grabbed his phone from his back pocket and tapped out a message before setting it back down on the table beside him. A few minutes and a buzz later, he grabbed the phone, glanced at the screen, and laughed.
Gerry couldnât help herself. She stood, took the phone from him, then choked back a little sigh of emotion. It was a picture of Emmie and Sophie curled up together, their arms entwined.
âDonât worry, Mommy,â Nicky said, wrapping an arm around her thigh and pulling her close for a hug she refused to return. âYour girls are fine.â
She knew he was mocking her. He was playing some game with her, and she couldnât abide being made fun of. With a harrumph, she slapped the phone back onto the table and left the room. Flipping back the curtain, she glanced out at the street.
There wasnât much car or foot traffic in front of Mere Owaâs home even though they were only a few blocks from the Quarter. Maybe the threat of ghosts was enough to keep the drunks and vagrants at bay. Just as she dropped the curtain to rejoin the others, a shadowy movement caught her eye.
