Chapter twenty-one

Turi

Snow flurries whipped across Turi's cheeks, sending a prickling sensation down his spine and seeping into his very bones.

The village was frozen in time. Just like the others he and Arlando had visited over the last several weeks.

Demons lurched around the village, their movements staccato and their sulfuric scent tainting the air.

I don't think I can take this any longer.

You must. If he is with us, then he is not with her.

Turi winced, knowing that the beast was at least right about that.

But saving Yari from Arlando's presence and further abuse came at a greater cost than Turi had anticipated.

No cost is too great! The beast snarled. She is the only thing that matters to us. We will do anything to save her.

He palmed his face in annoyance. He was also getting tired of the beast that lived just beneath his own skin. Always talking and coming up with horrific ways to end Arlando's life. And the sexual fantasies were getting darker and darker. It made him nauseated.

My fantasies are yours. I merely have the courage to speak them.

Shut up!

A piercing cry of terror ripped him back to the present. He turned in time to see a demon pulling a woman by the hair from one of the buildings.

Her eyes were wide with fear, and she clawed at the hand fisted in her hair.

He stood in shock at the woman. He'd never seen someone not fall to Arlando's spell when he cast it over an unsuspecting village.

"What do we have here?" Arlando cooed as he strolled up to the struggling woman. He bent at the waist to look into her eyes, and a smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "She's an immune," he said, turning to Turi.

"An immune?" Turi asked, trying to keep his face neutral.

"It's exactly how it sounds, brother," Arlando sneered, his face twisting into one of disgust. "Surely you're not that dense."

"I'm new to all of this," Turi hissed, his patience wearing thin. "Which, of course, you're well aware of."

He knew he was treading on thin ice with Arlando by speaking so boldly against him. But the beast within had a short temper and was easily riled.

Don't blame me. The beast interjected. This anger is yours and yours alone.

He bit the inside of his cheek to keep from screaming. I told you to shut the fuck up!

The beast shook out its fur before curling into a circle, its muzzle resting on its front paws. But it didn't say another word, and for that, Turi was grateful.

"I don't like your tone, brother," Arlando said, his eyes sharpening into daggers. "And here I was going to offer you this gift, but perhaps I won't."

"Gift?"

Arlando gestured to the woman who was now sobbing. "You have no mate of your own, and surely this immune can act as entertainment in the meantime."

We do have a mate. You took her from us!

The beast wasn't wrong about that, either. Turi had yet to figure out how Arlando had managed it. Still, after seeing his blood magic's power, Turi didn't have to wonder too hard.
