Chapter Thirteen

Tara tossed and turned the whole night. After the long day, she thought for sure she’d collapse on the bed in a dead sleep. The hot shower had loosened muscles that were screaming at her, laughing at what she had thought were great workouts from the gym, but the knots had returned as soon as she left the warm water. Her skin still tingled from West’s firm hands, the rough calluses, as they worked through those knots in her feet and legs, massaging the sore muscles until she was a wet noodle, ready to beg him to touch her anywhere else, everywhere else. And then he did something that just about stole her heart.

He actually listened and acknowledged that she may have been right about the ranch. What woman didn’t love hearing that a man was willing to change their own mind and consider another idea? Not that it stopped him from banging on her door at the rooster’s crow to do morning chores.

She eyed the medieval torture devices doubling as boots by the door, already dreading walking in them all day, but wearing anything else was too risky for her feet. A horse could step on her foot and break it easily enough through a sneaker, so the evil boots from hell would have to suffice for another day until she could get into town. She swiped the boots and opened the door. After coffee. She’d wait as long as possible to put the damn things on.

She stumbled over something right outside her door, something that made her heart flip. A pair of boots sat right next to her door, one fallen to the side, knocked over when she had rushed out. She dropped her old pair and knelt on the floor to examine the new boots, the soft brown leather, the durable tread so she wouldn’t trip, the reinforced steel toe, and the fancy tooling on the leg to add a little something extra. Her vision blurred and she blinked rapidly. Damn that man, finding new ways to manipulate her heart, whether he knew it or not.

Several minutes later, she bypassed the kitchen and the elixir-of-life coffeepot in search of her knight in leather chaps. A couple of horses whickered a greeting, probably impatient for their breakfast, but the rest of the barn appeared deserted. Her father’s horse, Ghost, poked his white head over the stall door and neighed at her, as if telling her to hurry it along. “I’m coming, sheesh.”

She paused to run her hand down his neck. “Hey, boy. I’ll bet you miss Dad, too. Probably don’t know what’s going on, do you?”

He nuzzled her chest, lowering his nose to her jeans pocket, almost knocking her over. She pulled out a peppermint candy and offered it to the horse. “You remembered this, didn’t you? I always brought you candy when I was little.”

West appeared from the other end of the barn and joined her on the other side of Ghost. He stroked the horse between the eyes, murmuring soft words under his breath.
