Less Than 20/20

I worked as an audio-engineer, recording albums and doing Front-of-House live sound, for just shy of twenty years. I was the House-Tech at a club in Toronto, and one of the guys who worked for me used to joke about how he never learned from his mistakes. “Nothing gleaned,” he would say, as if proud of the fact. He lived in the basement of the club, a dark and cockroach-infested labyrinth of bare concrete, empty beer kegs, and broken chairs. Sometimes he threw parties down there, and we’d all eat funky cookies that turned us into couch-locked potatoes. Sometimes, after the club had closed for the night, we’d set up a table on the stage under the lights, chain-smoke, and drink our day’s pay. He became the main character in this odd rock and roll time-travel story. I submitted this story to a couple of magazines. A few liked it but said it was too raunchy. It was never published.

Judging from the various references, I think I wrote this in 2009. I left the music business in 2012.
