CHAPTER TWENTY

Drake held his breath as Alicia and Mai interrogated the two Echidna gang members right under the noses of his friends. It was a furtive move, a sly effort, and extremely risky. But, so far, it was working a treat.

Alicia worked the knife further under Gumball’s body to keep it hidden whilst still holding the tip against his flesh, pushing it in slightly so that the man couldn’t help but gasp. Luckily, anyone watching would assume the gasp was a response to Alicia’s presence. Of course, why wouldn’t they, she thought. She pressed her weight down even further, so that it looked like she was teasing him. In reality she was just making sure he couldn’t get out from under her.

She said: ‘Karin Blake, the woman you kidnapped in association with Haley Rose. The other victim. Where is she?’

Gumball’s mouth fell open. ‘Please, no. They’ll kill me for that.’

Alicia nuzzled the side of Gumball’s face. ‘Not if I stick this fucking knife in you first, they won’t.’

‘I’m a captain with the Echidna. You can’t do this to me. Not here. Not in the middle of all… of all this.’

Alicia’s mouth curled into a cruel smile. ‘That’s your cue to talk,’ she said. ‘Y’see, we’re that good. We can get to you anywhere. Anytime. You can talk to me now and then keep your mouth shut. No one will ever know the information came from you.’

‘I am surrounded by my people.’

‘Open your eyes, dummy. I can kill you a hundred times over before they know what’s happening.’

Alicia was still draped over Gumball, pinning him to the hood of the car. She moved her mouth close to his ear.

‘Last chance.’ She said.

Nearby, Mai had Cheddar similarly trapped. Her knife was nestled into his back, close to his kidneys, the tip breaking the skin and making him bleed.

The odd thing was, however, Cheddar seemed to be enjoying it, the faintest play of a smile on his lips.

‘Where is Karin Blake?’ Mai whispered viciously, while keeping her expression serene, and her body relaxed. If Cheddar tried to escape, she’d stick the knife in deeper. The thing was, it didn’t feel like Cheddar was in any kind of distress over this prospect.

‘That bitch? Oh, she gonna get it all right. Snitch bitch, that’s what we call her.’ He spoke directly into Mai’s left ear, letting his lips rub against her lobe, his tone low and breathy. Mai couldn’t believe it, but he was also grinding his hips against hers.

Of course, to any witnesses, it all helped disguise what was really happening.

‘You know where she is,’ Mai said. ‘Tell me.’

‘Why don’t you stick it in a little harder,’ Cheddar breathed. ‘I love feeling it inside me.’

Mai cursed inside, wondering how she’d managed to end up with the depraved one. The only trouble was, Cheddar was right. Unless she pushed the matter, this was going nowhere.

Mai jammed the knife in further, and twisted it slightly. Cheddar gasped loudly, and raised his body, instinctively trying to escape the invasive blade, but grinning at the same time.
