Long Black Limousine
Ashlyn | March 30 | Madison Square Garden
âYa did good, there, Lady Ashlyn,â C.J. says. âTime to go home.â
âNot yet,â I say, tears wet on my cheek. âOne more thing to do. I need to make it to where Penny is, let her know that itâs okay.â
âNo can do,â C.J. says. âYou heard the Dark Lord. He gave you a job to do and you did it. Now I have a job to do, and thatâs to send you back home. No time to run any other errands before you leave.â
âYou were the one saying Penny was in danger. You were the one who persuaded me to come here.â
C.J. smirks. âWorked, too.â
I give her my best glare. âCall the Dark Lord,â I say. âAsk him for me. He understands about Penny; he wonât stop me from talking to her.â
âI have my orders, Your Worship, and they involve escorting you straight off this island.â
âYou canât stop me, C.J. Iâm going to find my sister.â
C.J. leans on her sword. âExactly how do you plan on doing that? Because I can tell you one thing, youâre not getting past me.â
âIs that a fact?â I ask.
âThatâs a fact.â
âYouâre forgetting something,â I say.
âWhat might that be?â
I pull the wand from its pocket. âYou have to catch me first.â
âI ainât too worried about that,â she says. She cracks a cruel smile, then snaps her fingers. All the house lights in the Garden come up. The arena is filled with dark furry shapes, all of them wearing hockey sweaters.
âMaybe you can get past me, but all of them? Not seeing it, Your Worship. Best to come along quietly. I can be reasoned with, but werewolves, you know, they donât excel in the art of negotiation.â
âI was right. This was a trap all along.â
C.J. smirks. âThatâs as may be. Question is, what are you going to do about it?â
All right, Ashlyn, I think to myself. You against the Warden of the Eastern Marches, backed by twenty thousand werewolves. How do you get out of this one?
Assets: my brain, my sword, the most powerful wand in the world.
âWhat I wouldnât give for a holocaust cloak,â I say.
âOld movie quotes ainât gonna help you any, love,â Valentine says.
Fight or flight. Fight or flight. Fight orâ¦
âAccio Broom!â I shout, and a push broom flies from somewhere into my outstretched hand. I climb aboard, and kick off the ground in one fluid motion. I rise into the air, wafted by a ragged chorus of howls.
Madison Square Garden turns out to be a pretty good place to learn to fly. No crosswinds, for one thing. I fly over the court in a lazy loop, about twelve feet up. The werewolves rush the court, but all they can do is mill around, waiting for me to fall. C.J.âs face is an unbecoming shade of scarlet, as she yells something at me that I canât hear.
I take a second loop around the court, rising until Iâm level with the new bridges, which are
