“I don’t like accepting charity.”

“And what does the Good Book say about false pride, daughter?” Doris shook her head and patted the bed beside her. Hannah reluctantly sat down as her mother’s hand reached for hers. “You’re a generous soul, Hannah. When you do something for someone else, do you feel as if you’re humiliating them?”

Her eyebrows rose. “Of course not! I’m just trying to help is all.” She realized what her mother was trying to say and heaved a sigh. “It’s not exactly false pride,” she admitted. “But I don’t like people feeling sorry for us.”
