CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO

Hawk drummed his fingers on the dashboard as Alex drove toward Mexico City. The four-hour drive from Guanajuato to the country’s capital was rather uneventful along the smooth modern highway.

At one point, the young man in the back groaned as he shifted around but eventually fell silent again. Hawk wanted to talk about what was going down with Alex, but didn’t for fear of waking their captive.

Eventually, they arrived at the CIA safe house just north of the city, parking in the garage and shutting the door before lugging the young man upstairs. On the third floor of the house, Hawk fastened the man to a chair and then left the room with Alex to discuss how they were going to proceed.

“Think he’s going to be coherent enough to handle what we’re about to throw at him?” Alex asked.

“I’ll make sure he is with a little shot of adrenaline.”

“You sure that won’t set him off?” she asked.

“It won’t matter if it does. He’s not going anywhere.”

Satisfied that they were ready to begin the interrogation phase of their mission, Hawk turned on the light and strode into the center of the room. The young man twisted and turned before opening his eyes. He squinted as he tried to adjust to the light.

“A special mission?” Hawk asked.

The man nodded. “I’ve been dying to get into the field more.”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” Hawk said. “We need to go over some basic information first. Let’s start with your name?”

The young man furrowed his brow. “Wait. You mean to tell me that you selected me without knowing my name?”

Hawk shrugged. “The rest of the agency only knows you as Officer Number Four Two Seven. It’s mostly to protect you from some of the moles floating around the department.”

“It’s Chris Squires,” the young man said.

“And, Chris, why did you join the agency’s youth program?”

Squires chuckled. “Anything to get away from my parents. You remember what that was like, don’t you?”

“I remember what it was like growing up without a father present in my life, but I wasn’t exactly the type itching to escape the house and strike out on my own.”

“Well, you’ve never met my father—an overbearing workaholic who teamed up with my mom to make my life a living hell. I must tell you that I didn’t shed a single tear when I heard they both died in a fiery crash in the Potomac River. In fact, I remember smiling when I heard the news.”

“Still feel that way?” Hawk asked.

“Hell, yeah. I hated them. They were both insufferable in their own way. The agency knows by
