Travis carried the box containing the tea set under his arm. “I can’t wait to see her open this tomorrow. I wonder if she even realizes it’s her birthday.”

“I doubt it. I never knew when my birthday was until I was a teenager and I asked.”

As they walked along, Travis asked, “Do you know anything about your parents?”

“Mr. Stanton pulled out my file just this morning. He said my father’s name was Raymond Hathaway, and my five brothers are James, Luke, Matthew, Paul, and Mark. The boys were all adopted.”

“And your mother?”

“She died. Mr. Stanton thought my father had brought all six of his children to the orphanage. I imagine he felt he couldn’t care for us on his own. I was told I was an infant at the time.”

“Would you like to find your father or brothers? I could hire a detective to try and find them.”

“Travis! Are you that wealthy?”

He chuckled. “Well, I’m not positive, but I know the ranch was successful and being single, I must have socked some money away. I doubt I’d spend much as a single man, except when it came to investing in the business. You know—more cattle, feed, and vet bills. And then there was the fifty dollars in my money clip—that’s more than the average man carries on him.”

“Maybe one day I’d like to find out what became of my family, but it’s not like we’d remember each other.

“Did the doctor say how long before your short-term memory returns?”

“He said that it never returns in some cases, but he seemed confident that mine would.” He shrugged. “I’m happy just to be starting my life right now with you and Molly. I’m fond of my new family.” He smiled down at her and put his arm around her shoulders. “I feel optimistic and happy despite the fact that I don't remember my past. Maybe there are things best left not remembered.” He squeezed her shoulders and brought her closer to him. “Yes, I’m a happy man.”
