Kate, sitting in the kitchen next morning with a mug of coffee, was trying to rationalise her feelings about Jack’s plans. She’d been reassured to some extent by Woody, and so decided it was time to put the whole thing to the back of her mind. Instead, she must continue to try to clear her own name, and the only way to do that was to find the killer.

She’d had no further contact with Charlotte, which was a little worrying. She had no idea if she was liable to be hauled back to the police station, or even if she herself was the number one suspect! She wondered briefly if she should inform the detective inspector about Delia’s visit to the hairdresser. On the one hand, surely Charlotte would have already checked Delia’s movements on the day of Timmy’s murder, since Delia was a suspect? And if she, Kate, didn’t tell Charlotte, would she be impeding the course of justice and all that stuff again? On the other hand, if she were to tell Charlotte about Delia’s visit to Tinworthy, she would probably have to tell Woody about her most recent visit to Bodmin Moor, leading to more recriminations and more lectures about not getting involved! Either way, it was a no-win situation.

Kate’s instinct told her to get on with it herself. It also told her that the only way to pinpoint the killer was to clear all the suspects, one by one.

It was time to get out The List again from the depths of her shoulder-bag, where it now resided. She smoothed out the piece of paper and sat down with it in front of her while she finished her coffee.
