My father wants to go to his office to bring home his files—he hasn’t been at work since Hassib, Uncle Wahid and Samera were captured and he fell ill. Now he wants to clean up his desk. As he leaves the house, I urge him not to take too much, and he promises he’ll be very careful.

I find another solution for the books. Two very tall, round iron canisters, used to store flour, stood empty underneath the stairs. The flour has been transferred into smaller containers, more manageable for relatives to divide once we’re gone. With my aunt’s help, I fill both canisters with books and cover them.

It’s early evening. Mir calls to say, in many coded words, that his brother and friends are not going to be executed. They may get a life sentence, but anything is better than an execution order. This is a bit of good news, I tell my aunt.

My father has not come back yet. My grandmother is murmuring softly, praying for him. “God bring him home safe. Help bring all missing loved ones home to their families.” We sit in the living room, eyes fixed on the door.
