Chapter 11

With nerves shaking her fingers, London inserted the key into the door from the garage, Seb behind her. Her high ponytail meant she could feel his breath against her neck, even from a distance.

She fought back a shiver and turned the knob, letting them inside.

“Let me just check the snack station in the dining room.” She glanced at him, her anxiety about tonight making her feel jittery.

He nodded. “I’ll go check in with my deputy and meet you upstairs.” He left the room through the pocket door into the living room while London went through the door to the dining room.

She took a steady breath as she flipped on the light and walked over to the long buffet and mini-fridge along the wall where she kept a selection of snacks and drinks for the guests and looked through the contents. Abigail had filled it that morning, so it likely didn’t need to be restocked, but London needed a moment to herself. When she had turned off her car and saw Seb walking into the garage, his long legs eating up the ground as he strode toward her with purpose, the butterflies had launched an attack in her stomach. Going to bed with him would forever change everything. There would be no going back to their safe, simple friendship after this, and that scared the daylights out of her.

Satisfied the snack station was well-stocked, she left the dining room, flipping off the lights as she went. The living room was silent, and she frowned. Where was Seb’s deputy who was supposed to be watching the house?

Instead of heading for the stairs, she went to the front door and turned on the porch light, peering out through the window to the side of the door. Seeing no one, she turned off the light. Maybe he had already left and Seb was upstairs. It seemed quick, but if it had been a slow night, that wouldn’t take long for the deputy to relay.

She walked up the stairs to the family apartment and pulled out her keys to unlock the hallway door and let herself inside.

“Seb?”

Silence greeted her, and the living room was dark. She flipped the light switch and gasped. The room was in complete disarray. All the books were off the shelves, the TV tipped over, and the couch cushions slashed, their stuffing sitting in tufts around the room.

“Oh my God.” Her purse fell from her numb fingers and she walked further into the room. Through the open doors she could see that her bedroom and Abigail’s looked much the same as the living room. She wandered closer to Abigail’s room and looked inside. It had been tossed, but not destroyed. Her bedding was on the floor and things swept off her dresser.

She moved to her own room and couldn’t hold back the sob as she stepped over the threshold. It had taken the brunt of the intruder’s rage. Her bedspread and sheets were shredded, and the springs pulled from the mattress to stick up like spikes.
