CHAPTER

TWENTY-FIVE

Dan had spent the journey to the unit in silence. He didn’t know whether to tell Mat about Mayer, or that he may have agreed to bail without discussing it with his son, or to raise possibly false hopes about Chris Ralston.

He had no chance to speak. Mat was already in the meeting room. As they came in, he gave his father a hug and shook Nirundorn’s hand. He looked between them.

“I’ve decided.” He paused and looked between them. “I think I’ve decided. I am not taking this bail deal. It’s corrupt and only means I serve a sentence somewhere out there,” he waved toward the small window in the corner of the room, “instead of in either this or another stinking prison.” He looked at his father. “This whole deal is bent.” He leaned toward them. “I did not do this. Someone set me up. I have no idea how or why, but it happened, and I’m in here, and it’s for you,” he pointed to the two figures sitting silently, “to get me out.”

Nirundorn started speaking. “Matthew, I beg you, I can get you out of here...”

Mat tried to interrupt, but Nirundorn raised his voice.

“No. No. You must listen to me. This is Thailand, and you are in the hands of police, the hands of Major Prisit, and the hands of a system that doesn’t care about whether you are guilty or not, because you have been caught carrying heroin. Therefore, you are guilty, and I can’t defend you. Your father can’t defend you,” he was almost shouting.

“Nobody can defend you. Take bail. Get out. Please,” he subsided into his chair.

“Please, I beg you.”

Mat looked toward Dan, who spoke softly. “I agree with Mr Nirundorn. Maybe it’s time to end this any way we can.”

They turned as the door opened. Prisit looked in, his eyes went from one to the other, and then, without speaking, he closed the door.

Nirundorn started again, his voice softer now. “Matthew. I believe you are not guilty. I have clients in Bangkwang the same. So, walk out of here. Out of Thailand. Forget Bangkok.” He breathed in deeply and looked between them, his expression declaring that he had said everything that could be said.

Footsteps clattered by outside.

There was silence.

Dan suddenly realised he was holding his breath. Mat touched the bruise on his cheek. But then he seemed to summon all his strength. Eventually, he spoke. “I couldn’t, though, could I? Not forget it. I’d be looking over my shoulder all the time.”

“Better than life in Bangkwang...” started Nirundorn, but Mat interrupted.

“I understand. Perhaps I’m being stupid, but what sort of life would it be? Karen Sucher is on Interpol’s top ten wanted list...”

Dan turned to Nirundorn. “Still? Is that right?”

“Perhaps. Possible, but not relevant.”

“It is to me,’ said Mat. ‘One of the guys here told me.” He shook his head. “I won’t do it.”

Nirundorn stood. He extended his hand to Mat. He looked defeated and didn’t say a word as he left the small room.
